Concerns On The Rise Due To Latest ‘Forever Chemical,’ TFA!

For years, scientists have raised alarms about “forever chemicals,” substances used in numerous household items linked to various health problems.

Companies and regulators have responded by phasing out these chemicals.

However, researchers are now focusing on a new type, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), found increasingly in rainwater, groundwater, and drinking water.

What is TFA?

TFA, or trifluoroacetic acid, is a byproduct of various modern appliances and products, particularly those related to refrigerants and heating systems.

It has a simpler molecular structure than other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), making it harder to filter.

Increasing Presence in the Environment

TFA’s prevalence is growing due to its use in climate-friendly technologies like hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) in refrigerators and air conditioners.

As these substances degrade, they release TFA into the atmosphere, which then returns to the earth through rain and other precipitation.

Recent studies by the Pesticide Action Network Europe revealed prominent levels of TFA in water samples across 10 European Union countries, with TFA levels 70 times higher than other well-known PFAS.

Health and Environmental Concerns

While the exact health risks of TFA are still under investigation, its persistent presence in the environment raises concerns.

PFAS, in general, are linked to cancer, infertility, high cholesterol, low birth weights, and other health issues. Scientists are still determining whether TFA accumulates in the human body and its long-term effects.

Challenges in Filtration

Due to its small size, TFA is challenging to filter from water. “It takes a lot of effort to get TFA out of the water,” says David Behringer, an environmental consultant. This persistent chemical spreads quickly, making it a significant environmental challenge.

Regulatory Response and Research

Currently, TFA is not regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States.

However, other countries are taking steps to address the potential risks. Germany has proposed listing TFA as a reproductive toxicant, and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has recognized its harmful effects on aquatic life and potential developmental toxicity.

As TFA continues to be found in increasing amounts in the environment, more research and regulatory measures are needed to understand and mitigate its impact.

Scientists and environmentalists are calling for better monitoring, advanced filtration technologies, and comprehensive studies to assess the full extent of TFA’s effects on health and the environment.

The persistent nature of TFA underscores the importance of proactive management and innovative solutions to protect public health and the ecosystem.
