Marcari, Russotto, Spencer & Balaban Donates to Support Hurricane Helene Victims in North Carolina

Chesapeake, VA – October 1st, 2024 – In response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, the law firm of Marcari, Russotto, Spencer & Balaban has made a significant donation to aid victims affected by this unprecedented natural disaster. The firm’s contribution is deeply personal, rooted in Senior Managing Partner Don Marcari’s strong ties to the region as an alumnus of Appalachian State University.

Hurricane Helene, the second major hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, has caused catastrophic damage across the Southeastern United States, with particularly severe impacts in western North Carolina. The storm’s effects have been far-reaching:

  • Dozens of fatalities reported across multiple states, including North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia.
  • Widespread flooding and property damage in western North Carolina.
  • Appalachian State University operating in emergency mode, with classes canceled on its Boone and Hickory campuses.
  • 25 North Carolina counties approved for FEMA aid.

“The devastation was beyond belief,” Governor Roy Cooper stated at a recent news conference. “This is something that’s never happened before in western North Carolina.”

The North Carolina State Climate Office described Hurricane Helene as a “monster storm” and a “worst-case scenario for western North Carolina,” reporting that “torrential rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Helene capped off three days of extreme, unrelenting precipitation, which left catastrophic flooding and unimaginable damage in our Mountains and southern Foothills.”

Don Marcari, Senior Managing Partner at Marcari, Russotto, Spencer & Balaban, expressed deep concern for his alma mater and the surrounding communities:

“I had the privilege of attending Appalachian State University for my undergraduate studies. Those years were some of the most formative of my life, not just academically, but personally. The university and the surrounding community were vibrant and supportive, filled with people who believed in fostering connections and helping each other grow. It was there that I found my footing and built the foundation for the success I’ve achieved today. The sense of camaraderie and belonging in that environment shaped my values, especially my belief in helping others. I’ve always felt a responsibility to give back and support those in need because that was the spirit of Appalachian State.”

The donation from Marcari, Russotto, Spencer & Balaban will contribute to ongoing relief efforts in the affected areas. The firm encourages other businesses and individuals to join in supporting the recovery process, which officials warn will be lengthy and challenging given the unprecedented nature of this storm.
